How to Prepare Your Home for Popcorn Ceiling Removal
You've booked the job. What now? Here's exactly what to do — and not do — in the days before your popcorn ceiling removal starts.
One week before
Decide which rooms are 'workspace' and which are 'sanctuary.' We'll seal off workspace rooms completely — you won't enter them until we finish. Sanctuary rooms stay untouched for you to live in normally.
Plan meals if the kitchen is part of the project. Most Green Bay families do 2–4 days of takeout or crockpot meals during kitchen ceiling work. Not the end of the world, but plan for it.
Talk to your kids and pets. Most kids find the project fascinating; most pets find it stressful. Consider a doggy-daycare or friend's house for cats during the noisiest days.
Two days before
Remove wall art, mirrors, and anything else hanging on walls in the work zones. Vibration from scraping can loosen wall attachments — we don't want your framed photos on the floor.
Take down any ceiling-mounted fans or fixtures you want to replace. We can leave them and work around, but if you're replacing anyway, this is the perfect time.
Move breakables. Anything glass, ceramic, or fragile should leave the work zone. We move furniture, but delicate items should be packed away or relocated.
The day before
Empty closets in the work zone if the closet ceiling will also be refinished. Otherwise, closets can stay full — we tape their doors closed.
Cover permanent-fixture items you can't move: pianos, large mirrors, chandeliers that don't come down easily. We bring plastic; extra layers of your own protection can't hurt.
Vacuum thoroughly. Less dust to start with means less to deal with at the end.
Plan parking. Our trucks and trailer need street or driveway access. If you have a narrow driveway, let us know so we can plan equipment staging.
The morning we arrive
Coffee ready (kidding, but not really — most crews will thank you).
Walk-through together. Point out anything special: a family heirloom, a delicate area, a specific finish preference. Once we start, the work zones are sealed and communication is by phone or text.
Confirm access: door codes, garage remotes, alarm codes if you're not staying home.
Set expectations for the end of day one. Most jobs are dustiest between hour 2 and hour 6 of day one, then calm down significantly.
During the work
Stay out of sealed work zones. Even opening a door releases dust into the rest of the house and undoes our containment.
Expect some noise — scraping, sanding, occasional hammer taps for drywall repair. It's not deafening but it's present.
Windows may be open or closed depending on humidity and temperature. We manage this to keep drying times consistent.
Water usage: minimal. Bathroom breaks and water refills only. We bring our own everything else.
Walkthrough day
Set aside 30–45 minutes at project end for a full walkthrough. Bring a flashlight — we'll use it to check every ceiling from multiple angles.
Note anything that looks off. We'll fix it before we leave. Once you sign off, we submit final invoice.
